Past Life, Present

This work stitches together fragments of imagery and material as a way of connecting to the past.

The combination of sacred and lost textile heirlooms quilted together traditionally with familiar visual motifs evokes memories from a past both personal and collective. Moments of absent recollection arise through the delicate pattern of a piece of lace once belonging to a curtain in a childhood home, an embroidered cloth reminiscent of a tea towel once adorning a grandmothers kitchen stove, or the impression of the material a father’s tie was once made from.

The physical construction of pieced together textile memories explores a place for contemplation; a space in which the viewer can reflect on their past while in the present. Deep colors and richly layered tones promote reflection of the past, encouraging the viewer to consider their experiences, the path that has led to this moment, and to move forward with appreciation of what has occurred.
